Chinese Garden Photo Competition 2013 winners announced

The theme of the Dunedin Chinese Garden Photo Competition 2013 was ‘Our Garden – Our Treasure’.

The judges were impressed by the photos submitted and the winners and the highly commended were announced at a prize giving at the Chinese Garden on Wednesday 4 December 2013.

All entries are now on display at the Chinese Garden until the end of Sunday 15 December 2013.

Category A (14 years and under)

Winner – Brennan McLean – Lilies and Dumplings
Judges’ comments – “beautifully composed image”, “nice use of close up details to convey the tranquillity of the Garden, rather than a more conventional wide-shot”

Highly Commended - Isabella Mclean –Peace and New Life
Judges’ comments – “Nice counterbalance of movement and stillness”, “liked the ‘new life’ concept”.

Category B (15 years and over)

Winner - Laurie White –Tranquil Reflections
Judges’ comments – “a beautiful image balancing compositional elements with surface layering and detail”, “this uses the reflective quality of the water and does indeed channel the tranquil essence of the Garden in a somewhat novel way”.

Highly Commended – Anonymous - Gate with Cyclists
Judges’ comment – “I liked all the elements that combine in this image – the glowering sky, the stunning gateway of the Garden, and the two cyclists passing by.  It reminded me of images of cyclists in China and the reference seemed apposite”.
